Women & Teens | Comparison and Discontentment
One of the many messages that women face is that they are in competition with other women, whether for jobs, spouses, families, image, beauty, or more. While everyone faces the temptation to compare him or herself with others, women especially are burdened in this area, and the outcome has not been positive for decades.
“A recent group of studies has found that women’s happiness levels have been dropping steadily over the last few decades, to the point that women now report lower happiness levels than men, a role reversal from the 1970s.[1]”
The modern rat-race can be brutal, and even the best secular psychologists and researchers cannot understand why everyone is increasingly becoming unhappy or discontent, particularly women. Thankfully, the Bible can serve as a guide and measuring rod to teach us true success and fulfillment. The Bible teaches us to experience contentment in our current context, that we can have joy and satisfaction knowing that we are exactly within God’s will for our lives. This is a radical notion during this time when the current understanding of happiness is usually found in this formula:
I’ll be happy when ____. (I make more money; my husband changes; the children finally behave; I lose weight; I get married). When happiness is based on shifting conditions, our state of mind will always be uncertain. God can rescue us from this way of thinking. For believers, our joy is rooted in knowing and obey God’s will and following his lead on this adventure of life. Novelty and boredom are only cured when we stop looking at ourselves and what we want or feel entitled to having, and look toward God to discover the calling he places on each person’s life.
At Lithos Counseling and Consulting, we will help each person explore the deep roots of discontentment and comparison. This journey is a difficult and desperately needed one in our society. We seek to help women connect with God’s purpose and adventure. We believe that women must first know their true and unique identity in God to help avoid comparison and seeking after what others appear to have.
