Men & Teens | Depression & Isolation
Have you been irritable or quick tempered lately? What about an uptick in drinking or withdrawing from loved ones? Do you feel disappointed and believe that your life has not worked out as you planned? Or maybe you are sad, and you don’t know why. These symptoms and behaviors may be signs of male depression.
"...[Men are] at risk for experiencing an alternative depression variant often characterized by externalizing symptoms.[7] Rather than appearing sad, men experiencing emotional pain are more likely to react with anger, self-destructive behavior, self-distraction, or numbing of pain with substance use, gambling, womanizing, and workaholism.[9]"
Depression for men and teens can be very difficult to identify. We typically mask our emotions and rely upon outlets which are mostly socially acceptable. We can escape into the fantasy worlds of video games and movies; we can do what appears to be the honorable thing such as working later and harder at our jobs, or bottle up our sadness or frustration. Known to almost each one of us, however, is that we NEED to appear independent and strong to survive and for others. However, without a strong foundation of our own worth, the worth of others, and known purpose for our lives, we will slowly deteriorate underneath the weight of the world. Numbers do not lie. Men and teens need specialized help.
Men and teens who experience depression are not alone. Many men remain overlooked and others assume us to be silent work horses. Our teens and sons are often upset, isolated, and feel deep wounds of rejection. Very little time and attention are given to males regarding mental health research, treatment, and resources.
Lithos Counseling & Consulting moves into the empty space to help men meet their needs and grow in integrity, strength, and mental well-being. Our services are specialized for the issues that men and teens face in today’s society. Our treatments are grounded in the Bible and counseling best-practices. Offering action-oriented sessions in a comfortable space for males, we hope to promote healing and thriving so that men and teens can be the best we can be for God, ourselves, our families, and our neighbors.
